On The Road To Wellness With Stays In Some Super Cool AirBnBs
For months I've been searching for a wellness retreat getaway that was close, not too expensive and filled with various activities to get the entire body, mind and soul package. At first I thought maybe I was asking for too much, but then discovered a day long women's wellness retreat just a couple hours north in Cleveland, Ohio that a good family friend was going to host. I quickly reached out to Sarah and RSVP'd because it actually met every criteria I was looking for!
With the retreat starting at 8a and ending at 8p on a Saturday I decided to make an entire weekend of it and invited my daughter, Hadley, to join me. We were excited for our girl's getaway and started looking for a place to stay. Lately when I've been traveling I've been starting my search with AirBnb's and VRBO's because I love the homey feeling and personal touches and I have to say, there are some incredibly cool places that are extremely reasonable. It didn't take too long for us to find the perfect place in the newly revitalized Hingtown, Ohio (Ohio City) area. The place we found was adorable, had plenty of great shops, restaurants and coffee in the neighborhood, and was not too far from the Westside Market. Plus it was just around the corner from our retreat space (which is also an AirBnb and amazing - more on that in a bit)!
Isn't it fab! And yes, those are live succulents on the side of the building. The windows are our living room and my bedroom. This place was comfortable, clean and stylish and definitely made us want to hang out!
We spent Friday afternoon exploring the Westside Market area and Friday night my son, Michael, came up to join us for dinner in Little Italy. As a mom of two adult kids who moved away, this time with my kids was definitely an added bonus!
Bright and early Saturday morning Hadley and I headed around the corner to our wellness retreat loft and oh boy what an incredible space it was! Turns out the couple who owns the apartment we were in also owns this loft. All I can say, is I would definitely love to meet this power couple, Graham and Marika. Their loft paints such a cool picture of who they are. Just take a look for yourself.
Super cool, and fabulous right!? If you are ever staying in Cleveland for anything I'd recommend looking these places up. Currently they have have three spaces listed on their page.
The retreat that Sarah put together was just as fabulous (just like her) packed with: vinyasa yoga; sampling and discussion on raw eating and juices with Anna in the Raw (who makes juices for a long list of professional athletes and teams); delicious fresh Farmer's Market brunch prepared by Chef Kelli Potts of Cleveland Field Kitchen; a city hike to and from the river where we stopped to take a rowing class with the Cleveland Rowing Foundation; a quick light bite break at Saucy Brew Works; and to finish out the day, back in the loft for mediation and foot massages before our Italian wine tasting that took us into the night. (You can read all about the Italian wines on Michele's Positively Prime website).
Sunday morning I woke up refreshed (and if I'm honest a little sore from rowing - hello muscles I don't really use), but happy.
We had to pick a word at the beginning of the retreat. My word was encouraged. During the retreat I felt it, but it wasn't until after when I took in all that I experienced - from the fitness to the new spaces, the amazing new ladies I met and the time with my wonderful daughter - that I truly realized just how not only very encouraging it actually was, but also how grateful it made me feel.
Travel Tip: Don't be afraid to look into staying at an AirBnb or VRBO. Many places are not occupied by the owner and are used solely as a vacation rental for a night, weekend or week-long stay. The Gadabout Gals stayed at the Villa Groovy Gecko in Belize which was an amazing VRBO and will be staying at another VRBO when we visit the Amalfi Coast in Italy next year!
