And Now We Know What It's Like To Dine Like Royalty

Enjoying our fabulous fine dining experience at Treadwell in Niagara-on-the-Lake

During our Wine and Waterfalls getaway we had the opportunity for two fine dining experiences, one in the United States and one in Canada. Both different, both extremely delicious and both a wonderful experience.

The first night of our trip we arranged for a Five-Course Winemaker's Dinner at The Lakehouse Inn and Winery right on Lake Erie in Geneva, Ohio. At the Inn and Winery you not only find beautiful accommodations and wine but a spa and very delicious restaurant.

At The Crosswinds Grille their passion is to serve quality local foods to their guest. Being a true farm to table venue we knew we were in for a treat. But when we received Chef Kristin's menu selections about a week before our visit we already felt our mouths watering! And when we found out that the wine pairings were going to be selected and presented by Winemaker and Owner, Sam Fagnilli we knew we were in for a royal treat. We'll give you a look for yourself.

Course #1 Shrimp & Grits: Sautéed Wild Gulf Shrimp, Shagbark Cheddar & Bacon Grits, Na*Kyrsie sweet Nduja

(Na*Kyrsie is a local Ohio-raised and seam-butchered meat company).

Course #2 - Ceasar Salad: Red Basket Romaine, Croutins, Parmesan Crisp, Ceasar Dressing

(Red Basket Farm is a small family farm specializing in growing fresh and unique product using sustainable and season extending practices in Kinsman, Ohio).

Course #3 - Rib Ragu: Braised Na*Kyrsie Pork and Beef Ribs, Preserved Tomatoes, Hand Cut Pappardelle, Middlefield Parmesan.

Course #4 Shepard's Pie: Ground Na*Kyrsie Lamb, Seasonal Vegetables, Smashed Rainbow Farms Yukons (Rainbow Farms is a produce grower in Madison, Ohio).

Course #5 Dessert House Made Maple Sugar Ice Cream:Bissell Farms maple sugar, Snowville cream, fresh farm eggs.

Bread Service: House Made Hearth Baked Bread, Minerva Dairy Butter, Pork Butter, Oil & Balsamic Reduction.

Everything about the meal and the wine was wonderful. Sam poured and explained each pairing as soon as each course came to the table. We left very satisfied and with full stomachs. To stay true to their mission the menu changes often, when the seasons do and can change with very short notice due to the availability of product from the farmers. Hi there, it's Gadabout Gal Kelly...and I'm picking it up here to discuss another of our fabulous dining experiences while on our Wine and Waterfalls trip.

As much as we enjoyed our time exploring the wineries, sights and flavors around Geneva, Ohio, we were also very excited to travel further north and visit Canada. We only had one evening to spend in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, so we knew that we wanted to find a special restaurant for our dining experience that night.

I was tasked with finding some dinner options for us to choose from. After doing some research of the area, I realized there were many great restaurants to choose from. I looked at many ‘Best Of’ lists online and read multiple restaurant reviews. I then noticed that the Post House Inn (our accommodations for the evening) had a great list of links on their site for attractions and places to eat. There were 11 restaurants listed for their ‘Favourite Places To Eat’. Perusing the list, one name popped out…mainly because it had also shown up on many ‘Best’ lists in my research: Treadwell.

Within moments of checking out the Treadwell website and reading their ‘About’ page…I knew this was the spot where we needed to dine. What specifically sold me (and my fellow Gadabout Gals)?

The Treadwell commitment to “farm-to-table” cuisine and how they create their menus upon the seasonal availability of locally-sourced products from the region. Everything on the dinner menu on their website sounded delicious!

Another key factor in our decision to dine at Treadwell: their vast and varied local and international wine selection, with an emphasis on sustainable, organic, and biodynamic

offerings from smaller, family-run producers. In addition, they offer a sommelier team to assist guests with wine selections.

Guess what? The opportunity to dine with suggestions from a sommelier was a key item on Gadabout Gal Tiffany’s ‘Bucket List’! You can imagine her delight when Jeff, the Treadwell Somm for the evening, visited our table and entertained our many questions and discussed his various wine pairing recommendations for us. Jeff was delightful and quite interesting, we all loved it.

Treadwell was very welcoming…from the moment we entered, we were greeted very warmly and felt a great vibe. A nicely laid out 2-area space, with lovely artwork and flowers, comfortable seating, cozy lighting and great energy. We were all very excited to be there.

Ambiance is always very important to me. Obviously, food and drink is at the top of my list…but I also appreciate a warm and cozy atmosphere, especially for a fine dining experience. In addition, our waiter for the evening, Greg, was very friendly and a lot of fun. He definitely helped make our experience even more enjoyable.

The menu for our evening was perfect ~ with just a small selection of very interesting choices. I love it when there are more than a few entrees that I really want to order, and I have a difficult time choosing just one.

After discussing the choices amongst ourselves and then getting some wine pairing suggestions from the Somm, we each made our final decisions. For a starter, we all shared the tasty Fresh Cut Frites with Rosemary Sea Salt and Malt Vinegar Mayonnaise.

For our entrees, both Tiffany and I chose the evening’s special: Braised Short Ribs atop an assortment of Roasted Root Vegetables. We paired this with the Icellars Cabernet Sauvignon. Michele decided upon the Pan Seared Northern Ontario Arctic Char with Cauliflower Purée and Chili Fried Brussels Sprouts. Her suggested wine pairing was the 13th Street Chardonnay. Oh my…everything was SO delicious and the presentation was just beautiful.

We ended our evening on a sweet note, by sharing the Dark Chocolate Marquise with Mulled Wine Sorbet and Black Raspberries. Dee-lish!

To say that we 3 Gals enjoyed our experience at Treadwell is an understatement. The ambiance and service was truly wonderful, and all of our dinner choices, wine pairings and the dessert were delicious.

We all highly recommend this very special restaurant if you are ever searching for a fabulous dining experience, and find yourself lucky enough to be in beautiful Niagara-on-the-Lake.
