An Ohio Winery Weekend Getaway: The Secluded Cottages at Vineyard Woods
Hey there, Gadabout Kelly here!
If you follow us on social media, then you are most likely aware that we 3 Gadabout Gals just returned from a fun 5-day ‘Wine and Waterfalls’ excursion ~ we visited the Grand River Valley wine region in northeast Ohio, and then went on to Niagara Falls and Niagara-On-The-Lake, Ontario.
We had a truly fabulous time!
Over the next few weeks, we 3 will be sharing various Travel Diary posts here about the many fun and fabulous places that we visited on our trip.
First up, I’d love to tell you about our 2 night stay at a beautiful cottage, located on a working vineyard!
We stayed at the lovely Vineyard Woods in Harpersfield, in the Grand River Valley wine region of northeast Ohio, located 45 miles east of Cleveland.
Let me back up a bit ~ you see, our Gadabout Gal Michele was born and raised in northeast Ohio, in Ashtabula. She often shares great stories about the area she grew up in and the fun places to visit in the region. When she first began telling us about the many beautiful vineyards and wineries in the area, Tiffany and I knew we needed to join her for a fun hometown visit!
When we decided to plan a fall trip to the area, Michele did some research and found us the perfect place to stay for our winery weekend ~ a secluded cottage in the woods, located next to a vineyard.
Opened in May 2017, Vineyard Woods is a delightful getaway location, set among 50 acres of pristine vineyard land.
Here’s a video of our drive up to the secluded Vineyard Woods Villa and Cottages:
Owners Scott and Katie Runyon have truly created a special and unique place ~
“Growing up less than 20 miles from what is now Vineyard Woods, we dreamed of coming back and opening a secluded getaway in the area. We wanted others to experience what we already knew, this area is a hidden gem. After many years of looking for the perfect property in the Grand River Valley wine region, we found exactly what we were looking for in Harpersfield, Ohio amongst the region's wineries. First you drive through a 10 acre vineyard comprised of Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, and Gerwurztraminer vines to arrive at 16 acres of rolling secluded woods where we've built storybook cottages and a multi-suite villa overlooking beautiful vineyard land. We are excited to share this new journey in our lives with you as we expand and become the area's premier getaway destination."
With more than 15 Ohio wineries located within 8 miles of the property, Vineyard Woods is the ideal spot to stay if planning a winery weekend or longer visit to the region.
We all agree that this is the perfect area for a romantic couples getaway...OR a fun family or group gathering, and we are thrilled to spread the word!
Vineyard Woods currently has a few lodging options (with plans for more in the future):
Three luxury storybook cottages (Magnolia, Creekside and Oak Cottage), tucked among large trees just off the vineyard….or the larger Vineyard Villa.
We stayed in the Magnolia Cottage and loved it!
From the moment you open the door and step inside, you realize it is something special. This is definitely not your typical hotel experience. Each private cottage features a large bedroom, wall mounted LED fireplace, bathroom with walk-in tiled shower, full refrigerator, and two burner stove. Each has a unique, private view from the covered porch off the living room overlooking various portions of the 16-acres of rolling woods.
The amenities include: LCD HDTV's with cable TV, complimentary wireless high-speed internet access, microwave, hair dryer, ironing board, shampoo, soaps and lotion.
Although the cottages are designed for couples, two of us Gals shared the king bed and the third slept on the comfy couch in the living area. It worked perfectly for our needs for the two nights of our visit!
Watch our check-in to the Magnolia Cottage for a peek at all it has to offer:
SIDENOTE: As you'll hear from the enthusiastic shout-out in the video, we were arriving to our cottage after a fun wine tasting at nearby M Cellars Winery with owner Matt Meineke. In addition to their own vineyard, M Cellars manages the vines at Vineyard Woods. Definitely check out M Cellars online, and if you decide to take a trip to this beautiful area!
Our fun tour and wine-tasting with M Cellars owner Matt Meineke resulted in just a few purchased bottles of delicious M Cellar wine! (stay tuned to our TRAVEL DIARY for a future post about M Cellars!)
Now, back to our stay at Vineyard Woods ~
We loved the cozy, contemporary farmhouse decor and all of the special touches that made our visit so nice: the keyless keypad entry, the stocked welcome basket in the kitchen with local coffee, tee and chocolates, the luxury linens and towels…and the cut wood and starters for the fire pit (we didn’t have a chance to use the fire pit this time, but we definitely plan to use it on our next visit!).
Just a short walk on the path from the cottages, the larger Vineyard Villa has three suites and can be rented either as an entire villa or as individual rooms.
The Cottages and Villa suites are spacious and have every luxury amenity you would want. The cozy, contemporary farmhouse decor is lovely...and the views of the surrounding vineyard and woods are magnificent!
We had the pleasure of meeting up with Scott during our stay and he shared interesting info about the area and gave us a walking tour of the property and the Villa suites.
We learned that Scott and Katie are enthusiastic about not only their own business, but in helping to grow the profile of the region and supporting other local businesses as well. It's all about collaboration...not competition. We LOVE that!

TRAVELERS TIP: Scott and Katie are excellent hosts and very helpful with suggestions on area wineries, activities and attractions. Their website is great and has a lot of good info...and beautiful photos as well!
We Gadabout Gals truly loved our stay at Vineyard Woods in the Grand River Valley and we all look forward to returning again, hopefully soon!
FUN FACT: Did you know that Ohio has 280 wineries and is the sixth-largest wine producer in the U.S? The Grand River Valley region is booming with new vineyards and wineries, yet Ohio’s wine industry remains largely a well-kept secret. That may not last long...especially if we Gadabout Gals have anything to do with it! If you do decide to visit this beautiful area and surrounding local businesses, make sure and tell ‘em that the Gadabout Gals sent ya!
